A lot of people are always confused about 2 things in their skincare routine:

1. The order of skincare products to put on during their skincare routine. For example common questions be like:

When should you put the serum?

Why should you use the oil last to lock in all the other products?

So on and so fourth...

2. Whether you need an eye cream when you can just use the face cream for everything? For example common questions be like:

Your eyes are still on your face, why can't you use the same cream?

Does using an eye cream actually makes a difference?

Ok now sit tight and read this. To answer your first question, you could keep one rule of thumb in mind when wondering about when to put what. It is to always, always, ALWAYS start light.

As Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, a board-certified dermatologist puts it, “Serums are formulated with small molecular weight actives so they penetrate into deeper skin layers." Meaning that, everything with smaller molecules aka products with lighter consistency should go on first.

YES, putting thicker creams and oils first will create a protective layer over your skin and hinder absorption thereby wasting your expensive serum! If you're asking why, let me paint you a picture. Imagine your pores like the sift you use at home to drain pastas. If you were to put a big lump of flour rather than shaking the fine texture down the fine flour will end up sitting on top of the big lump. That's what happens to your skin. Get it now?

Ok now let's move on to why you need an eye cream.

Why do you think you only have dark circles and eye bags under your eyes but not on your cheeks or nose? Well that's because the area around your eyes are thinner and more sensitive. Its also more prone to dryness and signs of fatigue. That's why it needs to be treated more delicately.

As dermatologist Patricia Farris, MD says, "Eye creams are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye, so they tend to be thicker. They contain more oil than a regular facial lotion, and they have a lot of active ingredients aimed at the problems we see around the eyes".

Now you've understood the secrets to perfecting your skincare routine. I hope this was helpful for you!
